Exterior lighting can take a number of forms. These range from ambient or general lighting to provide a security shield around the home to garden lighting to create dramatic effects. Whatever the choice of exterior lighting needs there are specific considerations that need to be addressed. This hub will attempt to address some of the common ones. Hopefully this will aid you in the purchasing decision when you come to select the specific type or types of exterior lighting you wish to install.

The three types of exterior light fixtures looked at are security lighting, providing a light blanket around your home at night, localized or task lighting which is intended to light specific tasks you undertake in specific areas of your plot, and finally accent lighting which is used to create attractive and atmospheric lighting effects, not for any practical purpose, more for your quiet enjoyment.

Security Exterior Lighting

Exterior security lighting is used in residential, although not exclusively as the technique works in commercial areas as well, in order to attempt to prevent criminal activity from occurring. This type of exterior lighting needs to be simple and bright. It is not usually needed in every area, but is mostly useful in lighting quiet, otherwise dark and secluded areas around your home.

In essence the principal behind this type of lighting is simple. It creates a blanket of light around the home to eliminate those areas that might provide cover for a thief to hide. In this way it also acts as discouragement to thieves more generally as they see that not only your home is well lit and therefore they are more likely to be seen, but also provides more general lighting for the area in which you live which discourages thieves from believing the area has potential in the first place.

It is widely believed that good levels of exterior lighting at night time do provide a form of security blanket around your home and you will find that law enforcement agencies wherever you live do encourage you to provide exterior lighting.

Localized Exterior Lighting

This form of lighting is used to light specific areas that are well used and in which an activity is undertaken that requires a good level of lighting. This localized exterior lighting is also know as task lighting as it is used to illuminate specific tasks being undertaken.

Examples of this type of lighting would be around your barbecue or external kitchen area, or to light a pathway through a dark area of your garden to ensure you do not step off the path and have an accident. Hopefully you can see immediately the practical applications of this type of lighting. Much as certain types of light create atmospheric effects at night time whenever you are involved in potentially hazardous activities such as food preparation, or walking through dark areas of your garden it is simple the sensible option to provide lighting to ensure accidents do not occur unnecessarily. You might also find examples of this in types of commercial exterior lighting.

Typically this form of lighting takes the form of a simple down-lighter, although there are any number of variations on the market today that are both practical and stylish and if you are looking for this form of exterior lighting fixtures you would do well to spend a little time searching online retailers to find exactly what you are looking for. As a starting point try searching for patio lights.

Accent Exterior Lighting

This is by far the most interesting exterior lighting to install. This form of lighting is intended to throw light onto particular objects in an interesting way with the objective of creating some artistic, dramatic or simply aesthetically pleasing effects. You may use solar lights to achieve this effect or specialist solar garden lights.

Types of accent exterior lighting might include:

  • Silhouette lighting. This type of light effect is created when you place a light behind an object you wish to highlight. Because the light is behind the object the object itself looks dark, like a silhouette. This form of lighting is a way of showing off interesting shapes, perhaps plants with large leaves or angular branches.
  • Up-lighting. This type of lighting is perhaps the most commonly used form of exterior lighting in gardens. The light is placed at the base of the object being lit and points upwards, creating a light source from the base upwards. This lighting effect works very well in lighting up buildings with interestingly textured walls or architectural features. Indeed exterior wall lights create particularly interesting forms of this type of light.
  • Shadow lighting. This form of lighting is used for dramatic or haunting effect. The light is placed in a position perhaps to the side of the feature, or at some form of angle, and the light effect casts shadows, making the objects features cast shadows, distorting your view and generally making the object appear slightly mysterious.

Summary of Exterior Lighting

In summary it should be clear that exterior lighting can both be useful in a practical way, by assisting you in home security or lighting otherwise dark areas, or by creating a lighting ambiance that enhances the enjoyment of your garden once the sun has gone down.

In short, you can use exterior lighting for a number of purposes. You do not have to be an expert to install this type of lighting and remember, given the obvious advantages and relative inexpensiveness of it you would be wise to consider installing some soon.
