Eliminate Credit Card Debt
67There are no special words that eliminate credit card debt. If there were nobody would be carrying debt. The special gimmicks or simple solutions would have eliminated everyone’s debt and there would be no need for articles and people teaching others how to accomplish this task. If you want to know how to eliminate credit card debt then you should first take note. It takes discipline and structure. One has to change the habits and strategies that have kept debt as a constant companion. The knowledge, strategies, and basic financial principles can be taught easily enough, it is changing the behaviors and committing to living differently that is the struggle that keeps many from achieving the goal.
Admitting the Truth
As with any problem the first step is admitting there is one. This can be challenging for many people. The more people involved with the debt the harder it is to develop a consensus that the debt needs to be addressed. All parties have to sit down and admit to what is owed not just on credit card debt but on all debts. It is impossible to address debt unless all parties can commit to telling the truth about money.
Creating a Plan
Once a list has been created of all the debts owed, a plan needs to be made. This is done through a budgeting process. One needs to list all the income and the current expenses leaving the household. It can be a challenging point for people to truly face the debt but it also is a moment of hope if a real commitment is reached to address the problem instead of ignoring it. There can be arguments and anger but in the end there is often relief and calm because regardless of how bad the situation it is finally being discussed.
Discussing Options
When one is in debt there are only two ways to start paying off debt, decreasing expenses and increasing revenue. One decreases expenses by making a very tight budget. This means only paying for those items one has to pay for and eliminating anything beyond food, clothing, shelter, and transportation from the budget. This is a moment of extreme tension for many couples and families who have been used to living beyond their means for a time. However, the alternatives are far grimmer. Increasing revenue generally comes in two forms selling items and getting more work. That can mean getting a better job, but more often means taking extra jobs to increase income. Down sizing products one can not afford such as cars with large payments is often a strategy used for debt reduction. Cars and homes are two places people find themselves in situations where they have purchased more than they can afford. Often downsizing to a more affordable option does allow one to begin to gain control of personal finances.
Paying off the Credit Cards
The only real way to legally eliminate credit card debt is to stop using them and start using cash or debit cards. However, this only works when one has cash to use. Before working on paying down the balance on credit cards and other debts, an individual should build a budget and a bank balance that allows for cash to be the basis of one’s financial life style. By this I mean the budget should account for not using the credit card to make monthly payments and there needs to be a bank balance for emergencies that used to be credit card costs. The emergencies will arrive and to prevent a return to the credit card life, one has to have cash ready. Before getting started on paying off the credit cards, establish a cash fund to replace the emergency credit card. This is probably the best way to eliminate credit card debt without bankruptcy.
